Joe Kuchta: Is the mendel a victim of proposed federal spending?
Submitted to The Globe and Mail on November 8, 2009 by Joe Kuchta
In recent weeks The Globe reported that Conservative ridings across Canada have received the majority of federal stimulus spending; and, that the Harper government is more interested in reporting how much stimulus funding has been allocated to projects, rather than making a priority of detailing how much is actually stimulating activity. One of the victims of this disturbing behaviour is the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon.

The Meaning of the Mendel

Forsaking the Mendel Art Gallery, Fred Mendel's extraordinary gift to
the city of Saskatoon, for a new art gallery at River Landing is an act of cultural vandalism. How can city officials and the Mendel board have made this kind of
shocking decision without consultation with residents and community
groups, the Mendel Art Gallery's many stakeholders, and the
Mendel/Mitchell family?

The Question of Accountability

Former Mendel board member Annemarie Buchmann-Gerber provides important insight into why things have gone so terribly wrong at the Mendel Art Gallery in 2009. She writes: "Before the board was stacked by the mayor, previous Mendel boards voted unanimously to keep the wonderful Mendel Art Gallery at its original site, which is one of the most beautiful sites in all of Canada and a very family friendly place beside the Kinsmen Park. The original Mendel building is an award-winning design and the proposed new design has integrity and consideration. Congratulations to the previous boards and directors."

River Landing, gallery decisions need explanation
Mayor Don Atchison and city councillors seeking re-election have a lot to answer for on River Landing. When
council began making decisions in late 2003 on the south downtown, the
public was not told how much the project would cost eventually. It
wasn't until November 2004 that city administration tabled its first
River Landing capital budget.
